The Makeup and Hairstyling category has only been existence since 2012, when the Academy finally recognized that great characters are created collaboratively, and the efforts of hair and makeup artists contribute tremendously to the success of a great story being told. This year there are three nominees in this category.
Makeup and Hairstyling Nominees:
Vice is an obvious pick for its transformative looks. Most especially, seeing Christian Bale turn into Dick Cheney and Sam Rockwell turn into George W. Bush is uncanny, if not a little scary! The movie nails the span of time periods that it takes place in and creates aging versions of its characters to fascinating perfection. Makeup and Hairstyling: Greg Cannom, Kate Biscoe and Patricia Dehaney.
Mary Queen of Scots gets a nod in this category, as well. With its sculptural hair and dramatic palates, the youthful beauty of lead actresses Saorise Ronan and Margot Robie are both used as an advantage and twisted into bizarre forms to express the dramatic psychological turns of the characters. Makeup and Hairstyling: Jenny Shircore, Marc Pilcher and Jessica Brooks.
Swedish film Border is also a consideration in this category. This unusual love story about two “trolls” who meet and fall in love has all the attributes of a fairy tale, albeit a very dark one, and required the creation of characters who appear to be not quite human. The two trolls have a remarkable resemblance and when together, do seem to be almost another species. The film creates both pathos and suspicion; these are complex characters that inspire endless curiosity. Makeup and Hairstyling: Göran Lundström and Pamela Goldammer.
