Fashion week is a roller coaster we all know and love. The buzz of anticipation and creation, the glamour and the clamor. New York Fashion Week 2019 is here and we’re ready for the ride. This year CFDA Chairman Tom Ford cut the official dates down to Sept 6-11. Squeezing a whole lot into only 6 days! But there’s lots more happening in the city all around this glorious event.
Fashion Week 2019: Shows, Venues, and Renegades
Though the official venue is Spring Studios in Tribeca, fashion insiders will be running all over town this year, and with the condensed schedule, it’ll be a pretty tight fit. Other venues include The Apollo Theater (Tommy Hilfiger) and King’s Theater in Flatbush, BK (Pyer Moss).
These days politics seem to be unavoidable, and some participants of NYFW have taken their own stand. Several shows were slated to take place at The Shed, a venue that’s part of the newly developed Hudson Yards. The Shed has had some interesting programming to date. It is also just the type of venue that allows designers to create the kind of dreamscapes that fashion shows are often made of. However, for political reasons, several shows have pulled out of that venue.
First down was designer Prabal Gurung, who pulled his show from the Hudson Yards venue. Other designers to take a stand include Rag & Bone, Vera Wang, Michael Kors, and the jewelry brand Fallon. Helmut Lang, however, took advantage of this interesting venue to show his 2020 Spring Collection on Sept. 7th.
Fashion Week 2019: Get In on the Action
Tickets to shows can be pretty impossible to get, but that doesn’t mean you that you are shut out of fashion week altogether. If you don’t have a coveted ticket to the Fenty show, check out free events that are open to the public.
Hotel 11 Howard has some great offerings:
We can’t wait to check out Toni Garnn’s “Supermodel Flea Market!” If you’ve always dreamed of rifling through the closets of the glamour elite, now is your chance. Celebrities, like the Hadid sisters, Karlie Kloss and Naomi Campell, have collectively donated 220 items to be sold at this flea market. All proceeds go towards girls’ education. A Chanel jacket that has the whiff of Naomi Campbell AND progress? Score! Sept 13-15
If you want a fabulous beauty treatment that loads you up on hydration and key vitamins try an IV Drip. Make an appointment here for Sept 6-12.
Shop Australian brands (Beach Collective, P Johnson, State of Escape, Hansen & Gretel) and take part in some tastings of Bluestone Lane’s new Grab & Go Australian Iced Coffee with Oak Milk, from noon to 7 p.m. on Sept 10 in the library.
Spotted fashion show and panel
This inclusive event on Sept. 13-14 kicks off at 11:30 a.m. each day with a runway show featuring “real women” and their personal styles. “The only label we wear tonight is confidence,” organizers state on eventbrite.com. The event will also give away free bubble tea by DIU with your selfie “printed” on its cream or foam. This venue boasts panel discussions, “unlimited selfie moments,” free touch-ups, a play station by WinkyLux, XXO Tinsley eyelashes, on-site embroidery by Morgan Powers USA and more. Tickets are $15-$25 and a portion of ticket sales goes to GC4W, a nonprofit that promotes the success of women around the world.
