Fashion Fix Friday: Drooping Hems

Author: Cheryl Kilbourne-Kimpton

While high-low hems may be all the rage, it’s only OK if they’re deliberate, and not simply drooping hems!

Drooping Hems: Torn by a Shoe

So you caught the heel of your shoe on your hem, or your five-year-old tugged at your skirt, or you’ve had some other disaster.  You need a quick fix, since you’re nowhere near your sewing kit.  What’s the best way to fix this? Topstick to the rescue.  Keep these strips in your purse (I like to put them in an old Altoids tin, along with other small supplies, like a tube of nail glue and a pre-threaded needle) and use them for when your hem just needs a lift until you can repair it yourself.

Drooping Hems: Lots of hems, not a lot of time

Imagine you’re on a movie set and you have 12 border patrol cops (or pilots, or men in full formal military uniforms, or some other well-tailored group of people) in front of you. Every one of them needs a quick hem, but you don’t have any assistants and also need something stronger than a piece of tape. Try the Micro Stitch Gun. This is a quick, strong way to ensure that everyone’s hems are perfect for inspection.  Instead of thread, it uses tiny fasteners (120 to a clip) that fastens fabric together quickly and easily.

Drooping Hems: Varying Lengths of Denim for Varied Shoes

I don’t know about you, but I have a favorite pair of jeans that sometimes I like to wear with flats, but sometimes, I like to dress them up with my favorite sky high heels.  How do you use one pair of jeans for both situations?  Try Hemming my Way.  They are adhesive snaps that allow you to adjust your jeans’ hem for two different shoes: whether that’s for flats or stilettos, boots and slingbacks — you pick!

Drooping Hems: For the Sewing Impaired

Are you sewing impaired?  Don’t have time to get to a seamstress or tailor? Stitch Witchery is the answer.  It’s a fusible mesh that you can iron on to create the perfect hem with no sewing required.  Just carefully measure your hem, make sure it’s even, slip the Stitch Witchery (cut to the circumference of the hem) inside and iron.  It’s very simple and effective.
