Fashion Week In A Pandemic

New York Fashion Week (NYFW) is one of my favorite events of the year. The city is abuzz with fascinating people and MWS is busier than ever. But this year is different, well everything in our lives is different. So, I wondered, can Fashion Week still happen? I am happy to say the answer is yes! Let’s take a look at Fashion Week in a pandemic.

IMG, the owner and producer of NYFW says the shows will indeed take place from September 13 through the 17th. The difference is that this year the shows will be a combination of live and virtual. According to the NYFW website, the shows will support designers in both physical and digital capacities. Some of those designers include Badgley Mischka, Christian Siriano, and Jason Wu, but there are many extraordinary designers involved.

The producers released a statement saying “We have worked closely with New York officials and key event stakeholders to deliver a combination of live and virtual fashion shows, presentations, programming, and experiences to advance designer’s businesses during the American industry’s most critical marketing period. All NYFW shows and events will adhere to the latest official health and safety guidelines, as the well being of the fashion community remains paramount.”

They plan to curate and host “culturally enriching conversations beyond the shows, transitioning this season’s events to the digital realm.” Their hope is that virtual talks and Q & A’s will feature creative catalysts, compelling topics, and campaigns driving fashion forward despite the pandemic.

The official digital hub of the shows is NYFW.com which has been expanded and enhanced to feature more live-streamed runway shows, exclusive designer content, cultural programming, and designer archives. I am actually really excited about this, not only is NYFW still happening but the virtual aspect will make shows and content available to those that would never be able to attend an actual fashion show.
