I Miss The Theater

I miss the theater. I miss doing it, watching it, seeing news and gossip about it. Yes, I miss it all. And we especially miss all of our talented, creative theater customers.

I Miss The Theater: The Met Gala

Monday would have been the Met Gala, which is certainly a type of theater. The theme-based costumes are a full production. I miss that glamour and excitement. MWS would always be extremely busy the week before the Gala. Stylists, hair, and makeup artists would be very harried getting everything they needed to make their clients look magically perfect.  I’ll let you in on a little secret I’ve learned during the Met Gala pre-week.  We sell a lot of Art Harding’s Instant Face and Neck Lift. Thanks, pros I tried it, it does work like magic!

I Miss The Theater: Broadway

MWS co-owner Cheryl Kilbourne Kimpton and I were very fortunate to see a preview performance of the revival of “Company” on Broadway in early March. We sat in a full theatre, had wine at intermission, and talked to our young seat neighbors who had never seen Company. The reimagined Sondheim musical was absolutely wonderful!  We were excited about all the youth in the audience who were loving it as much as we were. And we were vowing to see as much theatre as possible this summer and then a pandemic hit us and changed all of our lives. Oh, Broadway, I miss you so much!

I Miss The Theater: Student Theater

MWS has always relied upon the Theater community to make our business thrive and missing you as we do has affirmed that even more. Prior to the shutdown, we’d been reaching out to high school and college theater departments. We attended several USITT ( United States Institute for Theatre Technology) conferences. This year was canceled of course. Our hope was to help students and educators learn about the products that the New York Theater pros use.

To that end, our extraordinarily talented in house artist and cosplay expert Becka Noel created Titania from Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream.

Titania I Miss The Theater

Becka’s armored fairy was created using a range of products from thermoplastics like Worbla, Kobracast, and Fosshape, and all kinds of acrylic paints. Here is a complete list of Products used. Titania Product List

We have Titania displayed proudly in the store with a list of every product used on every part of the costume. And we look forward to the day you will get to see her in person again. One of the important aspects of Becka’s conception for Titania was the makeup. As with all theatre performers, it’s not just the costume that helps bring a character to life, the hair and makeup are always very important and MWS has always been proud to offer products that help perfect your characters.

We miss you all more than we can say. Broadway, theater in general, and all of the magnificently talented artists both onstage and behind the scenes that create the magic we long for. We miss our students, the young artists with dreams and goals to create theater despite this year of disappointment.

We are working hard to keep our online store up and running while we dream of happy days to come. So, we will see you soon.

A quick reminder, we have a fun contest going on for Cosplayers.  You still have time to enter. Just go to our Facebook page for all the details and a chance to win a $100 MWS Gift Card!
