Peter Pan Live Costumes

Last week, the now-annual NBC tradition of staging a beloved musical live, on television, entered its second year with Peter Pan Live.  It was star studded– from Broadway phenoms like Christian Borle and Kelli O’Hara to television star Allison Williams to fan-favorites Minnie Driver and Christopher Walken, this was a fun show that didn’t take itself too seriously.

Peter Pan Live Costumes: Designs by Catherine Zuber

Costume designer Catherine Zuber designed the costumes for this live spectacular. She’s won seven Tonys for costume design, including  “The Light in the Piazza,” “The Coast of Utopia” and “The Royal Family.” Her extensive credits include the revivals of “The Rose Tattoo,” “The Twelfth Night” and “South Pacific,” as well as original productions of “Doubt,” “Cry-Baby” and “The Bridges of Madison County.” She’ll be at the helm for costumes for the upcoming revival of “The King and I” (can’t wait to see those!). Also we would like to give a nod to Kenn Hamilton and his wardrobe crew for their hard work in making Catherine Zuber’s vision a reality.

Peter Pan Live Costumes: Mr. Darling to Smee & Pirates Galore!

Though in the stage show, it’s traditional for Mr. Darling and Captain Hook to be portrayed by the same actor, I loved Christian Borle switching it up and becoming Smee.  In fact, all of the pirates, in their shades of black, red and purple (a child’s version of sinister — think about it, Peter Pan is told from a child’s point of view!) looked pretty great.  We also loved Christopher Walken’s cartoonish Hook, with his drawn-on mole and comical swagger.  This is one fine looking group of pirates!

Peter Pan Live Costumes: The Lost Boys

Remember the cartoon, where they were all in adorable pajamas? The Lost Boys have grown up a bit (okay, let’s face it, they were all in their 20s and 30s with the exception of the little kids!) and their costumes reflected it.  Bright colors, a lot of whimsy, and a definite impression that these were kids who had run away from home– and were living it up!

Peter Pan Costumes: Peter Pan Himself

Peter Pan, played by Allison Williams, evokes the traditional Peter Pan image of a green sprite. Short hair, green palette, and a touch of gold fishnet — did he steal it from Captain Hook’s ship?  Who knows, but it’s got a great look, perfect for the Peter Pan we know and love (but reimagined a bit for 2014).
