4 Things We Fell In Love With At Comic Con

MWS made its first trip to Comic Con this year and it was truly a revelation. Love at first site! Cheryl, Tommy and friends from MWS spent the weekend soaking it all in, meeting cosplayers and making new friends. What an experience!

4 Things We Fell In Love With At Comic Con: The Scope

Even knowing that Comic Con was at the Javitz Center couldn’t prepare us for the magnitude of this incredible convention. This community is robust. The first NYCC was held in 2006 at the Javitz Center and 33,000 fans attended. The numbers have steadily been rising since then and this year 200,000 tickets were sold. And it sure felt like that many people! There were times when travelling 20 feet was daunting. This confirms that Comic Con is no longer just for the most diehard fans. Though they still rule the roost, there’s no denying that Comic Con has gone mainstream. It’s an attraction for everyone, and it was truly amazing to see so many people come together to enjoy and recreate art that they love.

4 Things We Fell In Love With At Comic Con: Freedom and Fandom

Though the name suggests that this is primarily a convention about comic books, the convention really celebrates pop culture and fandom. It was amazing to see how creatively fans had transformed themselves into their favorite super heroes, characters and odd creations. Looks ranged from precise accuracy to sexy to whimsical commentary. One of our favorites was a cowboy who managed to combine the AMC show “The Walking Dead” with the film “Love, Actually.” Huh?!! It was awesome in its ridiculousness and a totally unique expression of fandom. He made it work! There was a sense of total freedom for fans to do just about whatever they wanted to do… and they sure did it.

4 Things We Fell In Love With At Comic Con: The Friendliness

Despite its enormity, Comic Con really feels like a community. Attendees milling around our table complimented one another’s costumes and shared information and tips readily. There was obviously great enthusiasm for the comics and pop culture, and it really seemed to extend to the people as well. People were excited to show off and share, and just as excited to see what others had made. Fans came by our table to meet Becka Noel and Dhareza Maramis, and the love and friendliness was palpable. People in this community support each other!

4 Things We Fell In Love With At Comic Con: The Curiosity

Comic Con attendees wanted to know all about what we had on hand and what they could do with it. This is a community that likes to get in there and get their hands dirty. They like to make stuff. We flew through our supplies and had some amazing conversations about upcoming projects that attendees were planning. We were truly impressed both by what we saw, and by the enthusiasm to keep creating. We hope that fans will follow through and show us what they make from the supplies that they got.
