New Broadway Trends for Fall 2014
Author: Cheryl Kilbourne-Kimpton
It’s almost time for new shows to open on Broadway. What are the new Broadway Trends for Fall 2014? We are looking at some great new shows (and costumes to go with them!) for 2014. Last year’s Broadway season was full of period pieces and classic musicals. What will we see in Fall of 2014?

New Broadway Trends for Fall 2014: Books into Broadway
Playbill.com’s list of upcoming shows notes a couple of books being made into plays or musicals. The Curious Incident of the Dog in Night-Time, a play based on the New York Times Bestselling book of the same name, stars Alexander Sharp, Taylor Trensch, Ian Barford, Helen Carey, Francesca Faridany and Enid Graham and opens in previews September 10th.
New Broadway Trends for Fall 2014: Movies into Musicals
It’s not a new trend — from Legally Blonde to Bullets over Broadway, movies are regularly turned into musicals with varying amounts of success. This season, you’ll see Honeymoon in Vegas, the 1992 Nicholas Cage vehicle, turned into a musical starring Rob McClure, Tony Danza, Brynn O’Malley and a bunch of flying Elvises. Finding Neverland, produced by Harvey Weinstein and based on the movie of the same name, premieres in Boston this month and is expected to hit Broadway in the fall. Bull Durham, the classic baseball movie, will be made into a musical to premiere at the Alliance Theatre in Atlanta in September with an eventual Broadway run. And don’t forget King Kong! It will be a musical, too.
New Broadway Trends for Fall 2014: Old Friends Team Up
Matthew Broderick and Nathan Lane are pairing up for It’s Only a Play, at the Gerald Schoenfeld Theater. It’s Only a Play is a play (no Producers reprise, here) about a play debuting on Broadway. How very meta. It opens for previews on September 4.
New Broadway Trends for Fall 2014: Revivals Abound
Who doesn’t love a good revival? There are several this season: A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum, Noises Off, The Elephant Man, You Can’t Take It With You, and Dames at Sea. Revivals are always fun — it’s great to see old favorites restaged and reimagined for modern audiences!
New Broadway Trends for Fall 2014: New Plays
Lots of new plays are opening this season, with very modern and pertinent topics. Michael Cera, Kieran Culkin and Tavi Gevinson star in This Is Our Youth, about teenagers growing up in 1982. Disgraced, starring Hari Dhillon, Gretchen Mol, Karen Pittman, and How I Met Your Mother’s Josh Radnor is about a Muslim-American lawyer and his wife at a dinner party that explores race and culture. Ewan McGregor, Maggie Gyllenhaal & Cynthia Nixon star in the new Tom Stoppard play The Real Thing, about a playwright and his wife and their marriage.
There are so many great shows opening — we can’t wait to see what the costume, hair and makeup designers come up with! Many of them shop with us at Manhattan Wardrobe Supply, and we look forward to seeing their creations on stage.
