The Costume Designers Guild Awards, held on February 23rd, celebrated last year’s greatest achievements in film and television. It was a joyous evening for nominees and attendees alike. Here’s how the fabulous evening played out!
Costume Designers Guild Awards: The Winners
To begin with, Mad Max: Fury Road took top honors in the “Fantasy Film” category. Of course, given the film’s acclaim, this win was anticipated.
On a more surprising note, The Danish Girl won for “Excellence in Period Film.” A highly competitive category, the movie beat out early favorites Brooklyn and Carol.
Additionally, Beasts of No Nation, produced by Netflix, emerged as the winner in the “Contemporary Film” category.
And, of course, it was also a big night for television with American Horror Story: Hotel (Contemporary), The Knick (Period) and Game of Thrones (Fantasy) all taking home prizes.
Costume Design Guild Awards: The Honorees
No matter whether she’s dominating the red carpet or sizzling on the big screen, Cate Blanchett is a true fashion icon. Therefore, it’s only fitting that she was chosen as the recipient of the Lacoste Spotlight Award. When presenting the award, Sandy Powell proclaimed that Blanchett was a designer’s dream. And we can certainly understand why!
Besides Blanchett, veteran costume designer Ellen Mirojnick received the “Career Achievement Award.” Mirojnick’s fabulous contemporary designs have been featured in such classic films as Fatal Attraction and Basic Instinct. Moreover, she won an Emmy for the fun and extravagant numbers she created for HBO’s Behind the Candelabra.
Finally, the “Distinguished Collaborator Award” went to Quentin Tarantino. The Hateful Eight director was honored for his creative partnerships with costume designers throughout his career.
Congratulations to the winners and nominees alike for their outstanding work this past year! We can’t wait to see what you have in store for your future projects!
