Fashion Fix: Zipper Nightmares

Zippers are both an amazing invention and the worst.  When they work, they’re great– and sometimes even decorative! When they fall down, get stuck, or break, you’ll want to throw that favorite garment away. Don’t worry — you don’t need to! Here are a few tips to get those zippers back into shape.

Zipper Nightmares: Falling Zippers

Do you have that one pair of pants or jeans whose zipper never stays up?  This is a super easy fix: safety pins! Just pull that zipper into place, put the pointy end through the hole on the pull, and pin it to your pants. Easy!  Keep safety pins in your purse, bookbag or briefcase– they’re good for all sorts of things– if you lose the pull somehow, you can use a safety pin to act as the pull in a pinch, too.

Zipper Nightmares:  Hard to Zip Zippers

Do you have a tough zipper? One that just won’t close or open without a lot of tugging?  First, use a pencil and rub the “teeth” on both sides of the zipper to get it started. Graphite is a natural dry lubricant.  If that doesn’t work, try  Zipper Ease, which conditions and lubricates the zipper, to make this so much easier!  This is also great for vintage clothing that might need a little protecting.  It’s easy to keep this in your bag or in your sewing kit.

Zipper Nightmares: Broken Zippers

Broken zippers are awful.  They can be difficult to fix yourself, expensive to send to a seamstress, and can make you think you need to throw away that beloved garment. Nope!
