Fashion Week 2017 is taking over New York City once again! The biannual event kicked September 7th at Madison Square Garden. And this year, NYFW is partnering with Macy’s to grant widespread access like never before. Indeed, Macy’s is hosting a number of in-store events around the country. These will feature celebrity and designer appearances, special performances and fashion presentations. Now everyone can get in on the action!
Fashion Week -2017 Spring/Summer – Be Seen (or Not)
Certainly, designers debuting collections at Fashion Week hope to stand out amidst a crowded field. Therefore, it’s not unusual for them to latch on to a gimmick for inspiration. You might say that’s true for designer Heron Preston, who has previously worked with Kanye West and Nike. This year, he’s designed a unisex clothing line made from the re-purposed uniforms of sanitation workers.
If you’re hoping for more of a spectacle, all you need do is turn to Tommy Hilfiger and Gigi Hadid. The two are planning to stage a carnival at South Street Seaport. Dubbed “Tommy Pier,” the event is going all out and will be replete with a Ferris wheel and carnival games. If that wasn’t enough, the brand is presenting their first “see-now, buy-now” collection. Hence, all pieces appearing on the runway will be available for purchase immediately. Buyers can purchase items online, at the pier and at all Tommy Hilfiger retailers.
Conversely, a handful of well-known designers are opting to sit this Fashion Week out. Instead, popular brands like Kate Spade and Derek Lam intend to present their work to a tightly curated audience of buyers and journalists. Even Diane von Furstenberg’s collection will be shown by appointment only.
Fashion Week -2017 Spring/Summer – Highlights so far
So far, many designers have stunned us with their collections, but we choose to highlight the three below for the clarity in their vision and how subtly they updated and reinvented the female form.
The sumptuous Russian Tea Room held Brandon Maxwell’s new collection, who continues to put a spin on classic feminine shapes. He used only 3 colors, black, white and a grayish green to showcase how talented the Lady Gaga stylist is at cutting his pieces to perfection and letting his impeccable construction shine.
Rag and Bone brought a futuristic feel to their collection, but maybe just 6 months from now. The way they managed to update seemingly outdated pieces by reinterpreting their details was very inventively done. They brought back the mom jean and the extra large poncho and made them look cool.
Leave it to Vera Wang to surprise everyone with a deep dive into her darker, sheerful side to present a collection that was a far cry from the wedding gown designs she is known for. It also presented what could be one of the most memorable pieces of fashion week so far: her pearl-embellished black and white dress.
