How to Choose the Right Shoelace: Different Types

You can distinguish shoelaces by material and shoe type.

  1. Material type: Shoelaces come in different materials. Some of the most popular are textured polyester, cotton, nylon, flat waxed, polypropylene and leather.
  2. Shoe type: Not all shoelace types will go well with all shoe types. For example, you might want dress shoelaces for your dress shoes but go for a different type of lace for your boots. It’s important to distinguish which laces are best for which shoe, as the overall look and finish will be vastly different.

Commonly Asked Questions about Shoelaces.

  1. How Do I Clean Shoelaces?

You can clean shoelaces easily with dish soap and water. All you need to do is soak them for 20 minutes before scrubbing away any dirt. However, please don’t do this with leather shoelaces. Instead, use a damp cloth for leather shoelaces and hang them to dry.

  1. What Is the End of a Shoelace Called?

Shoelaces have hard bits at the end called an aglet, usually made of plastic or metal. Now here is a cool idea, kick up your kicks with aglets. We have an Aglet Kit from Lace Lab that comes with the aglets/lace tips and glue. They are easy to use and come in gold, silver, and gunmetal. The kits are available in a narrow cylinder, wide bullet cylinder or square.

  1. What’s the Ideal Length of a Shoelace?

Luckily, there is a simple method for estimating the right shoelace length. Simply measure the length of your current laces, and then go up, down, or stay the same depending on how they fit. Or if you do not have the original lace simply use a string to take the measurement.

Another method is to base the length on the eyelets. To do this, count how many eyelets the single shoe has. Then, divide that number by two. This will give you the number of pairs of eyelets your shoe has. You can then use a simple chart to estimate the length of lace you need.
