Spirit Gum: Tips,Tricks and How to Use

Spirit gum is often used by special effects (FX) makeup artists and hairstylists to apply facial prosthetics, hairpieces, and wigs. While it’s predominantly used in the entertainment industry, there are also many cosplay role-players and makeup enthusiasts that use it to reach their desired effects.

If you’re a beginner, you might have a few questions about using spirit gum.

• How does it come out?
• Does it damage your skin?
• Can it pull your hair out?

Don’t worry!  When used the right way, you’ll have no problems. Before jumping into fun with playing with facial prosthetics or gluing on a fake mustache, here are some tips and tricks for how to use spirit gum.

 Choose the Right Type

The first step is knowing which type of spirit gum to use. There are several different types, and your choice will depend on what project you’re working on.

 Water-Based

Water-based is for sensitive skin. It isn’t quite as long-lasting as the other types, which means it is usually only used for smaller pieces and for a shorter length of time. It works well for a photo shoot, but if you’re going to be standing all day in the warm sun, consider a more potent type of spirit gum. There are very few brands that make water based. Kryolan is the most popular.

 Standard

The standard is how it sounds – the standard type. This is used for all sorts of reasons, including gluing on wigs and facial prosthetics.

 Matte

Matte is a lot like the standard. The one difference, though, is that it dries matte.

TV-(also Matte)

TV  is used for wearers in front of the camera, which means it’s made to be much more concealed and is matte. So, when TV spirit gum is used correctly, you won’t even notice that it’s there. This is also great for photography.

Always Start with Clean Skin

For best results, make sure that any area where you are going to apply spirit gum is free of makeup and oil by wiping the area with some alcohol or astringent.   

Use Quality Products

Like any other product, you should look for quality. Reviews from special effects (FX)artists, wig makers, and cosplayers come in handy when deciding which brand to go with. Don’t use your favorite makeup brushes when applying spirit gum. You will never be able to use them again

 Take Your Time and Use a Steady Hand

When sitting down to put on some facial prosthetics or hairpieces, make sure you have the time to relax, focus, and do it properly. If you rush the job, you might up end up with an undesirable final result. So, once you’re ready, take a deep breath to steady your hand, and proceed.

 Let the Spirit Gum Get Tacky

To ensure that the prosthetics or hairpieces don’t slide around, wait a few moments for the spirit gum to get tacky before placing anything onto it. Doing so allows the material to have an easier time sticking and drying, plus you won’t have to hold it in place with your hands for quite as long.

 An easy way to speed up the process of the gum getting tacky is to dab it gently with a sponge or your fingers.

 Hold in Place for at Least Thirty Seconds

When it comes to applying spirit gum, it’s important to hold the hairpiece or prosthetic for at least 30 seconds to ensure the product sticks. Doing this will help to ensure a nice, finished look.

 Move Around to See if it Holds in Place

Before getting up and heading out in front of the camera or onto the stage, make sure everything is set in place and that nothing will slide around or fall off. If you’re wearing facial prosthetics, try creating a few different facial expressions and seeing how it holds.

 If the prosthetics or hairpieces are on your body, get up and move around to ensure it’s both comfortable and secure. The last thing you want is a makeup malfunction in front of a camera or audience!

 Always Have Spirit Gum Remover on Hand

When you buy spirit gum, also buy spirit gum remover. Trying to remove hairpieces or prosthetics without the proper product could result in irritation or damage to the hair or skin. By using the correct remover, the spirit gum will come off quickly and easily.

 Be as Gentle as Possible When Removing

When using the remover, be as gentle as possible with your application. First, apply the remover over the spirit gum, and let it sink in. Then rub the area gently to prevent discomfort or irritation.

 Use Moisturizer

It’s important to use a moisturizer – the more the better – to help ensure your skin avoids any irritation and stays well-protected. And use moisturizer as often as you can. Your skin may feel slightly sensitive after application, so choose a moisturizer that’s aimed at sensitive skin but still provides a lot of moisture.  

 Let Your Skin Breathe In Between Uses

While using spirit gum is perfectly safe when used properly, it’s a good idea to give your skin a good amount of rest in between. If you are practicing your FX makeup for a specific date, for example, then try practicing different areas on your face on alternate days. Your hair and skin will thank you!
