Recently Joelle Garguilo from NBC NY Live stopped by to visit Manhattan Wardrobe Supply to talk shop and explore one of New York City’s best-kept secrets. It’s not anymore, the word is out!

MWS Origin Story

Working in the back of the wardrobe truck while filming “You’ve Got Mail”, Tommy Boyer and Cheryl Kilbourne-Kimpton, wrote the business plan that would become Manhattan Wardrobe Supply. The store was originally focused on carrying supplies for professional costumers. No longer would valuable time and manpower be lost going from store to store for thread, detergents, hangers, etc. One call or visit to MWS and your shopping list would be satisfied.

From the humble beginning of 1 computer, a single desk, and 4 shelves, Manhattan Wardrobe Supply has grown to 6,000 sq ft. In 2014 MWS added Hair and Makeup supplies. Making it the ultimate one-stop shop! Our customer base has expanded as well, which now includes the general public, sneaker artists, cosplay artists, and fashion stylists, along with Hair, Makeup, and Wardrobe professionals from the world of TV, film, theater, and educational institutions. Come on in the door is open!

Arriving at MWS

When you arrive at 245 West 29th Street (between 7th and 8th Avenues), take the elevator to the 8th floor. Turn left from the elevator (unless you are picking up an order, which is to the right) and you’ll walk into our MWS wonderland.

Hair and Makeup Supplies

Right inside the door is an impressive selection of set bags in every shape and size to accommodate all your needs. Next you will be very impressed by our large variety of blood and special effects products. From gels and molds to create your own wounds and effects that can be easily attached to the skin. We have a vast array of preps, adhesives, and removers. There are several brands of tattoo covers, alcohol palettes, and airbrush paints.

Our beauty makeup department is very special with extraordinary brands such as  Cozzette, Paris Berlin,  Danessa Myricks Beauty, Koh Gen Do, William Tuttle, and RCMA. Along with skincare brands Bioderma, Embryolisse, Menaji for men, and much more.

Our mustache, beard, and sideburn pieces come in a large variety of shades. Theatrical makeup is one of our specialties. We have large displays of Ben Nye, Mehron, Kryolan, and face, and body paints. Makeup experts are on hand to help you with your projects.

Wigs supplies have always been an important department of our store. We sell several brands of wig blocks, holders, wig caps, adhesive tapes, toupee clips, wig lace, and more.

Hairstyling products include hot tools, professional combs, and brushes, hair dye accessories, and an amazing selection of hairpins and clips. Hair products include full lines of Bumble and Bumble, Layrite, Olaplex, Toppik, American Crew, and more. We have root touch up and fun temporary sprays and crayons to temporarily color your hair as well.

Wardrobe Supplies

On the right side of the store, you’ll find our traditional wardrobe supplies.  You’ll see our vast array of intimates, shoulder pads, dress shields, and Topstick to start. Then shop all your essentials such as garment bags, drawstring bags, rack covers, and hangers.

From there, You’ll see ironing boards, steamers, and related accessories such as steamer replacement parts and lint rollers. Now wander through our laundry department and note our vast array of stain removers

Our sewing department with gorgeous silk threads, prefilled bobbins, zippers, corset supplies, and every sewing accessory you’ll need. An extensive array of Pins and needles, scissors, elastic, hooks, snaps, velcro, and gadgets to make your job easier.

Our shoe department starts with our Angelus paints and dyes along with other great-selling cleaners/restorers. From there you’ll find an impressive array of cleaners/restorers, polishes, creams, and stretchers/trees.

Our Cosplay and Crafts section is amazing!. The creations on display by Darayz Cosplayza and Beckanoel are magnificent and are made from  Worbla, Eva foam, Fosshape, paints, and fabric dyes.
