The Dyeing Process:

Using the Back to Blue denim dye kit is a straightforward process that can be completed in just a few simple steps:

2. Prepare the Dye Bath: Fill a plastic bucket or stainless steel container with 3 gallons of very hot water (140F). If the water from the tap is not hot enough, heat some water in a cook pot to boil and add to the dye container.
3. Dye Preparation: Shake the dye bottle before pouring. Wearing rubber gloves, pour the dye into the water. Then measure 1 cup salt dissolved with 2 cups hot water; add to dye bath. (Salt helps to intensify the color.) Then add a squirt of dishwashing liquid and stir well. I like to use Ivory Liquid.
4. Test your Dye Color: Test your dye color to be sure you are satisfied. You can do this by dipping a swatch of white fabric or a paper towel into the dye bath. If the color is too light, add more dye.
   
5. Dye Your Denim: Immerse your wet clothes in the dye bath and stir continuously for 20 minutes. Wearing rubber gloves, move the clothing item back and forth and up and down. This helps to ensure an even color. Tongs are also helpful for lifting. Continue to stir occasionally for 10 minutes or until the desired color is achieved (up to one hour). The longer the clothes remain in the dye bath, the darker the color will be. Color will appear lighter when dry.
6. Fix the Color:  To help reduce color bleeding and improve color retention, treat fabric with Rit ColorStay Dye Fixative immediately after dyeing and before rinsing. Follow the package instructions. Remove the article from the dye bath and squeeze out excess dye. Fill a container with 3 gallons of hot water, add 4 Tablespoons (1/4 cup) of dye fixative; and stir well. Immerse clothing items in the fixative, stirring occasionally for 20 minutes.
7. Rinse and Dry: Remove clothes and rinse in cold water until water begins to run clear. Then machine wash with an old towel in warm water with mild detergent, rinse, and dry. If desired, iron to remove excess wrinkles
