Oscar Nominations 2017

For many cinephiles, the day Oscar nominations are announced is akin to Christmas morning. There’s anticipation, expectation and always a few surprises. Certainly, this year was no different and it was thrilling to see such a talented and diverse group of artists being recognized.

La La Land leads the pack with a whopping 14 nods (tying with Titanic and All About Eve for most nominations ever). Of course it wasn’t a total shock given the musical’s record-breaking appearance at the Golden Globes. Trailing slightly behind are the fantastic sci-fi thriller Arrival and critical darling Moonight, each with 8 nominations. And Manchester by the Sea, Lion and Hacksaw Ridge all received an impressive 6 nominations.

Certainly, MWS is very excited for all the nominees. However, we couldn’t pass up the opportunity to highlight our two favorite categories: Costume Design and Hair and Makeup.

 

Oscar Nominations 2017: Best Costume Design

Madeline Fontaine – Jackie

Acclaimed French costume designer Madeline Fontaine (Amélie, A Very Long Engagement, Babel) received her first Oscar nomination for Jackie. And for good reason! The precision of her designs is stunning.

Consolata Boyle – Florence Foster Jenkins

Consolata Boyle, previously nominated for The Queen (2006), receives her well-deserved second nomination for another one of Stephen Frears’ movies – Florence Foster Jenkins. The film also reunited Boyle with Meryl Streep; the two artists previously worked together on The Iron Lady (2011).

Mary Zophres – La La Land

Mary Zophres received her second nod for her wonderful work on La La Land. A longtime Cohen Brothers collaborator, she earned her first nomination after working on their remake of True Grit (2010).

Colleen Atwood – Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them

Colleen Atwood adds another nomination to her already illustrious career. She has now been nominated an astonishing 12 times. Moreover, she’s 3-time winner, earning statues for Chicago (2002), Memoirs of a Geisha (2005) and Alice in Wonderland (2010).

Joanna Johnston – Allied

Joanna Johnston’s stellar designs earned her a second nomination for Robert Zemeckis’ Allied. She was first nominated for her work on Spielberg’s Lincoln back in 2012. Johnston has been fortunate to work with both directors on multiple occasions throughout her career.

Oscar Nominations 2017: Best Hair and Makeup

Alessandro Bertolazzi, Giorgio Gregorini and Christopher Nelson – Suicide Squad

Bertolazzi (Skyfall, J. Edgar), Gregorini (Avengers: Age of Ultron, The Rum Diary) and Nelson (Deadpool, The Walking Dead) certainly had their work cut out for them on Suicide Squad. The creativity they demonstrated, from repurposing rubber stoppers and mop strings to using four different types of clay for the Enchantress’ skin, truly shows that this honor is well earned.

Joel Harlow and Richard Alonzo – Star Trek Beyond

Harlow (Inception, Into the Woods) and Alonzo (Avatar, Iron Man) brought their supreme talents to Star Trek Beyond. The artists faced the daunting task of creating 50 (yes 50!) distinctive alien races. And, as evidenced by their nomination, they pulled it off brilliantly.

Eva von Bahr and Love Larson – A Man Called Ove

Von Bahr (Girl with a Dragon Tattoo, Real Humans) and Larson (The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, Wallander) scored a nomination for their work on the Swedish sleeper hit A Man Called Ove. The two had the challenge of aging the titular character over the course of many years. And their successful results helped to craft a wholly affecting film.
