New York Fashion Week: Men’s kicked off on Monday for its 4th edition. The biannual event is once again taking over NYC (or Lower Manhattan, where the most of the shows take place).

Some of the most influential designers on the international fashion stage share the spotlight with designer on the rise. They will all have a chance to leave a lasting impression in the ever-growing, competitive field of men’s fashion. That feat won’t be easy as some 70 shows and presentations will be going on during the four-day event, which ends on Thursday, Feb. 2.

New York Fashion Week: Men’s 2017 – NY Men’s Day

Monday, Day 1, was deemed New York Men’s Day. It was an opportunity to give up-and-comers a chance to show their creations simultaneously in separate rooms at Dune Studios. The innovative event showcased the collections of Bristol, David Hart, Kozaburo, Krammer & Stoudt, Max ’n Chester and Uri Minkoff, David Naman, Maiden Noir, Private Policy, R. Swiader, By Robert James and Wood House.

Many of those designers had a punk or rebellious theme in their collections or in the tone adopted in their accessorizing. For instance, New York-based designer Robert James presented a collection that couldn’t be more zeitgeisty. After all, his male models held signs with hash-tagged political messages. As for the collection, it was a play on camouflage, both for its color scheme or the actual prints, sometimes seen in unexpected fabrics.

New York Fashion Week: Men’s 2017 – Other Highlights

We can certainly say New York Fashion Week: Men’s has found its footing as more and more established and celebrated designers are flocking to be part of the still newish event (as a comparison, London started the men’s week in 2012). This year, the biggest new acquisition is without a doubt Raf Simons. The Belgian designer, former woman’s designer at Dior and current Creative Director for Calvin Klein, has been the talk of the town as of late. He’ll be presenting his own men’s wear line on Wednesday.

Ralph Lauren, who was absent in the last two iterations of the event, makes his return. Well, to some extent, that is. He will be showing his collection by appointment only on Feb. 1. This year marks the 50th anniversary of Mr. Lauren’s legendary brand. Last September at NYFW Lauren adopted the “see now, buy now” format. He unveiled a second Autumn/Winter collection and all the looks went on sale immediately after the show in Ralph Lauren’s stores, select stockists and on its website.

Among other illustrious brands and designers showing this season are Hugo Boss, Tim Coppens, John Varvatos, John Elliot, Stampd and Todd Snyder.
