Fashion Week – Fall/Winter 2017

Author: Cheryl Kilbourne-Kimpton

It’s that time of year again – New York Fashion Week is making its triumphant return to the city (February 9th – 16th). The semi-annual event attracts roughly 100,000 people and generates an astounding $880 million in revenue. But more importantly, Fashion Week enables the industry to easily identify emerging talent and helps to solidify the status of today’s top designers.

We here at MWS are quite excited for the upcoming event. And not only do we have everything a fashion professional needs to ensure a smooth week, we also have the scoop on the exciting days ahead.

Fashion Week – Fall/Winter 2017: What to Expect

This year, a handful of designers have decided to forgo the designated NYFW venues, opting for more unique settings instead. For starters, Alexander Wang will be hosting his show at the historic RKO Hamilton Theater, once a vaudville house and movie theater in its heyday. Additionally, Kate Spade will show her collection at the Russian Tea Room and Tory Burch at the Whitney Museum. And we’re certainly in full anticipation for Philipp Plein’s show at the New York Public Library. Known for his extravagance (think fireworks and monster trucks), we can’t wait to see what he has in store.

Of course, some designers and brands will be absent from the event altogether. Indeed, Rebecca Minkoff, Tommy Hilfiger, Rachel Comey and Tom Ford all decided to skip New York in favor of showing in LA. And brands such as Rodarte, Keno and Vetements are waiting to unveil their new collections in Paris the first week of March.

Finally, we’d be remiss if we didn’t mention one of Fashion Week’s most anticipated shows – Raf Simons for Calvin Klein. Simons (a former designer for Dior) is set to debut his first womenswear collection for the brand. And, to add to the excitement, this will be Calvin Klein’s first-ever joint men’s and women’s ready-to-wear show.

Fashion Week – Fall/Winter 2017: “See-Now-Buy-Now”

A few seasons back, a handful of forward-thinking designers started offering their entire collection to customers immediately following their show. Dubbed “see-now-buy-now,” this allowed designers to completely bypass the traditional six month waiting period. And while some might have initially been dubious, it looks like this practice is here to stay. Brands that have been experimenting with this model include Burberry, Ralph Lauren and Tommy Hilfiger. And this Fashion Week, even Club Monaco and Banana Republic are getting in on the action.

Fashion Week – Fall/Winter 2017: Planned Parenthood

This year, the Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA) has joined forces with Planned Parenthood to launch Fashion Stands With Planned Parenthood. They hope to raise both awareness and funds for the organization. As such, the CFDA has created a magnetic pink pin and is encouraging everyone to take a picture wearing one and share it using the hashtag #IStandWithPP. Planned Parenthood, whose funding is currently under threat, will certainly benefit from NYFW’s global reach. And more than 40 designers, including Tory Burch, Diane Von Furstenberg, Narciso Rodriguez, Zac Posen and Kate Spade are all in support of the cause.
