You need to know how to master the techniques, though, if you want the best results.

It starts with using the right spray paint for leather shoes. Saphir Tenax leather spray will permanently renew or change the color of leather, vinyl, or plastic. Quick-drying Saphir Tenax leather dye is available in a wide range of colors, this dye can be used with both leather and synthetic leather but not with suede nor nubuck.

Spray Paint and Tools you will need to Spray Paint Shoes:

Before you begin, make sure you have all your supplies and that you are working in a well-ventilated, well-lit area. Ventilation is especially important, as many types of paints emit fumes harmful to the airways. The best way to improve ventilation is to paint the shoes near a large open window. Don’t forget to also make sure you protect the surface that you are working on.

How to Prep Shoes for Spray Painting:

First thing’s first – you need to prep. By getting everything organized and preparing the shoes properly, you can focus on your technique, creativity, and the canvas shoes during the painting process.

  • Take the time to prepare your shoes – new or used – for painting, and the color will look better and last longer.
  • Use the deglazer, preparer, or acetone to remove the waxy finish, dirt, and oils on the shoe. Apply with a cotton pad, ball, or rag, rubbing briskly until the shine disappears and the shoes have a dull surface.
  • Make sure there are no cotton fibers stuck on the leather. Allow the deglazer to evaporate for approximately 15 minutes.

Once you have prepped and have your shoes and the best shoe paint ready, you are set to begin painting.

Patience is key when it comes to spray painting shoes.

Spray Painting can be a time-consuming process. Rushing will only result in painted shoes that crack or flake. To make sure the paint stays, you need to be as patient as possible. Paint dries slower than you might think!

6-Steps on How to Spray Paint your Shoes:

  1. Stuff toes of shoes with newspaper or plastic bags to create a smooth surface. It will help create a smoother finish with fewer cracks and mistakes.
  2. Use masking tape to mask off any areas that you do not want to paint.
  3. Spray paint lightly with a long, even, sweeping motion. Keep your hands as steady as possible.
  4. Several thin coats will wear better than fewer thick coats. Remember – go slow!
  5. Allow each coat to dry for 1 hour between applications.
  6. After the final coat is applied, let dry for 1 hour, remove the masking tape, and then allow the paint to cure for 24 hours.

As you can see, it’s a slow and steady process that requires a lot of waiting. If you want your shoe paint spray to look pristine, you need to be patient.

How to Protect your Spray Painted Shoes:

No, you’re not quite done yet! If you want your spray paint to last well, you need to protect it. It includes using finishes on your shoes.

Although not required, finishes serve two purposes. They add protection that preserves your paint job, and they can also give your shoes a matte (non-shiny) or glossy (shiny) surface. Whatever surface you choose, always apply several light coats, allowing each to dry between applications.

Tips for Spray Painting Shoes:

  • Newspaper. If you are painting delicate or soft shoes, stuff the toes with newspaper or plastic bags to create a smooth surface.
  • Base Coat. If you are painting with metallic colors, use a “base coat” in a similar, yet nonmetallic shade. This will provide a more even surface for the metallic coat.
  • Light Color First. If painting shoes in multiple colors, start with the lighter color first, then progress to the darker color. (If you make a mistake, it’s easier to hide it by painting dark over light than vice-versa.)
  • Do Nots. Do not use wool daubers for painting. They are meant for applying dye or polish, not paint.
  • The Best. Use the best spray paint for leather shoes you can get your hands on. Angelus Leather Paint is an excellent choice.
