Makeup: Hedwig and the Angry Inch

Author: Cheryl Kilbourne-Kimpton

“Hedwig…” came to Broadway earlier this year starring Neil Patrick Harris.  The latest actor to don the glitter and lipstick is none other than Michael C. Hall, of Dexter fame. A picture was just released of Hall in Hedwig makeup and it’s pretty impressive.  Kudos to Hair and Makeup Design by Mike Potter and Costume Design by Arianne Phillips.

We are so excited here because at month’s end  you’ll be able to buy the makeup products for this look at MWS Pro Beauty, a new division of Manhattan Wardrobe Supply!  Here’s a quick preview to whet your appetite.

Makeup: Hedwig and the Angry Inch Base

The nice thing about the Hedwig makeup is that you can use regular foundation that matches your skin.  Be sure that you shave first! For a dewy look, a little Kryolan Shimmer Event Foundation mixed with your regular foundation will give you a bit of a glow. Don’t forget to set with Mehron Celebre Pro HD loose powder — Hedwig may glow, but he doesn’t shine.  Oh course if your an “airbrusher” the Kett line has everything you need.

Makeup: Hedwig and the Angry Inch Contour

This isn’t a traditional highlight/contour combo, but more of a late 70’s use of blush to create stark cheekbones.  Cream blush is best for this with a dusting of powder blush on top; try Mehron Cheek Cream in Red Rose for the perfect stripe of color and a dusting of Glo Minerals Begonia Blush on top.

Makeup: Hedwig and the Angry Inch Eyes

This eye makeup look is a ton of fun.  Start by covering your eyebrows– you can use spirit gum (be careful about removal!) or by using dry soap and then a layer of stage wax.  Cover with your foundation, then redraw your brows in with a black brow pencil, such as Kevyn Aucoin Precision Brow Pencil in Dark Burnett. Be sure to set with powder to make sure those brows don’t move (unless you’re moving your face, of course!).

On your eyes, start with a primer like Kryolan Eyeshadow Base, then apply white eyeshadow all over, from lash to brow.  On top of that, use Kryolan Iridescent in Serenade on the lid and into the crease, blending well and out towards the edge of your drawn-on brow. Glo Minerals Professional Eye Shadow Magazine has it all.  Then, line your eyes with black Mehron pencil liner, smudging with a smudge brush.  On top of the Serenade, and towards the edge of the cheekbones and slightly under the eye, pat on Mehron Mark Reid Glittermark in Deacon Blue.  Make sure you get under the eye as well and onto the cheekbones. Don’t forget to top with some fake lashes!  Mehron Diamond lashes would be great for this look.

Makeup: Hedwig and the Angry Inch Lips

A nice, true red lipstick works well here,  you should start with a matching liner to build a lip-line just outside of your natural lip. Julie Hewett’s Noir Collection Lipstick and Lip Pencils offer a range of reds for everyone. On top of the lipstick?  Use just a bit of gloss to hold some red glitter.  Mehron Paradise Glitter in Red works great!

This is just a preview — we have a lot more makeup blog posts scheduled to launch MWS Pro Beauty. Check back often for new products, and check out  MWS Pro Beauty in person at the end of the month!
